IVOR RICHARDS / SCULPTOR

I studied fine art sculpture at the Central School of Art and Design, London. I graduated in 1972 - BA Fine Art Sculpture.

I live and work in North Wales, UK where slate is an integral part of the landscape. After working in stone and bronze I have come to regard slate as my major medium. To carve, make marks in stone, is an instinct millenia old. In using this ancient material I attempt to cut images with an archetypal quality in tune with its age and durability.

My work progresses as a series, honing the image and focussing the symbolic edge. One major theme has been the human eye where the viewed is viewing the viewer. I have also taken inspiration from Welsh legend and history. Recently I have been interested in exploring the theme of 'cuts' as impossible marks in slate. This has resulted in my work taking a new, more abstract direction with an element of the surreal.
